why does the moon get so full
she asked with a questioning face
and who's gonna keep me warm
why did my daddy walk away
why can't i live in a house
on a hill or far away

why do i even ask why
its a sign of the times
closing on in
why can't we hear our own lies
and search for the truth again

well they say it's a twist of fate
it gets you in or takes you out
providential circumstance
isn't that what life's all about
well go tell that to the widow and the orphan
well preach that to the hungry and the poor
numb my heart and my hands
and i can't feel them
i can't feel them anymore

why do we climb up the ladder
just to buy a bigger view
so we can stand and look down below
and say we've got something to prove
we all wear those colored ribbons
a tiny sign of a much bigger need
it's the though that counts, not an answer
but the price is rather cheap

so why speak your cold solutions
and your warm but empty words
please don't show me your clean hands
when i see on mine only dirt
and don't avoid the faces of the orphans
when they cry to be caught from the fall
tell her why her stomach is empty
